SOCC
artists work with homeless youth to create digital mural for MCASD
Thursday,
April 7, 2005
SOCC
artists Perry Vasquez
and Mario Torero worked
with homeless and at-risk youth from the Monarch and Harborside Schools
to create a digital mural for the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
As part of the program, students were given a tour of Chicano Park by
Torero and a tour of Petco Park by San Diego Union Tribune sports writer
Nick Canepa. Combining painting, fotoaktion and the theme of "Art
Saves Lives," lead artist Vasquez helped the students create artwork
for a digital mural on the construction fence that fronts the Museum's
expansion project on Kettner next to the Santa Fe Depot. Vasquez worked
with the museum's education curator, Monica Garza, to develop workshops
to help the students incorporate their painted and photographic imagery
into the banners. An ice cream social was held for the students on Thursday,
April 7. Click here for more photos.
